The flight response to stress

Anxiety stems from the emotional mind

Anxiety is just your "primitive" or emotional mind working overtime on your worries without finding a solution to your problems. You will know the difference because when it's your intellectual mind that addresses your problems, either it puts them in perspective or it goes into solution mode and tries to find an answer.

Your emotional mind, on the other hand, will think about your problems, whether real or imaginary, and will worry sick over it without ever finding a solution for them. You might even have obsessive thoughts about these problems that pop into your head uninvited. This is an absolute waste of your time.

As the Dalai Lama said in one of his books: "if you have a problem, either there is no solution, in which case, it is pointless to worry about it, or there is, in which case there is no reason to worry".

Anxiety does not resolve problems, it aggravates them

Worrying about things of the past will not bring resolution to these problems and worrying about things of the future is a waste of time because until these problems actually arise they are not real and might never happen. How many times have you worried about something that didn't happen in the end? And this would have involved hours of worrying. In effect, worrying about them intensely might increase the chance of them materialising. The law of attraction stipulates that what you give importance to attracts more of the same. Is that what you really want in your life?

Anxiety: how to manage it?

The first step to alleviate anxiety is to understand the negative impact that worrying about problems has on your body chemistry. It triggers adrenaline and cortisol which prevents endorphins, the natural feel good chemicals of our bodies, to function and flow freely. It starts a negative thinking cycle that spirals uncontrollably. It prevents you from feeling good about the good things in your life. You won't even be able to appreciate them anymore. It pervades your entire life.

You need to learn to watch your own negative thoughts and to "pluck" them out when they appear. It is a conscious decision to stop worrying but you know the benefits are real. How is it that in similar circumstances some people are happy whilst others feel sorry for themselves? Happiness is a choice. So start watching your thoughts and consciously decide which ones you want to keep alive in your mind.

No one leads a stress or problem free life - however you can control how you feel about it

Relaxation, meditation, laughter, yoga, exercise, healthy social interaction, creative activities such as crafts or art, positive thinking, etc can all contribute to help. Understanding that: when you sustain negative thoughts and you worry, your emotional mind cannot make the difference between what is real and what is not so it puts your body in alert mode, which entails the following problems: high blood pressure, sweating, poor digestion, problems with fertility, allergies, poor immunity, etc.

It doesn't matter which level of stress you have in your life: do something about it now. One of the things you could do is buy my relaxation CD or book an appointment with me on  07914 606729 .
