I find this question usually difficult to answer. As I work intuitively, every session is different. One thing you are guarantee to find, however, in all sessions, is that the focus is about you, not me. My clients interests always come first and foremost.
In the traditional Usui school, a reiki treatment will last between one hour to one and a half hour and will involve a sequence of hand positions starting from your head to your feet and working through your chakras to balance and energise them. Treatments are usually done on a massage table. I have described this sequence in my reiki I manual and it is consistent with most reiki teaching.
However I work intuitively and although sessions can follow this format, most of the time they don't.
Firstly I don't see anything wrong with doing ten minutes of reiki on a chair when I see someone in need and I only have that much amount of time. As a matter of fact I find that most babies and very young children will only take in up to half an hour, no more. The reason for this is they don't analyse what is happening and they soak everything in. Their minds don't block it.
Secondly, I let my hands go to where they have to go and I usually work a lot at the level of the aura without touching my clients. Having been trained as a spiritual healer before becoming a Reiki Master, I suppose I have brought with me that intuitive level of work. Guides work through me and I trust that they know better than me what is needed although I am in control of what they do, as a channel. I know this statement might irritate or put off some people but I work with spirit. Spirit works through me, although I can assure you I am very selective of whom I work with.
So you can expect to have a short conversation with me over the phone when you make an appointment where I will ask you whether you have had hypnotherapy and reiki before and what you want, then we'll discuss what brings you to me and what is the presenting problem and I will tell you how much I charge. If you are happy with that, we'll make an appointment (usually day time appointments).
On the day of the appointment, I will greet you warmly into my therapy room and go through the usual form filing format. After that, and depending on your condition, I will either lay you on my massage table or in a comfortable chair. I usually play some relaxing music and then place my hands on your head or shoulders to make a connection. From then, I usually take you through a guided therapeutic meditation, using my hypnotherapist skills for best effect. I have a fairly soporific voice which is another way to say that I put people to sleep easily so I am confident that if you retain nothing else, you will at least have a good rest.
At the end of the session, I offer you a glass of water and we discuss what it was like for you and, if I feel it is appropriate, I share what I might have picked up. Last we discuss whether you need to come back and if we both feel that this is the case, we make another appointment. And then you pay me. Great!
